Caption: Streptococcus A bacteria. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a chain of Streptococcus group A bacteria, also known as Streptococcus pyogenes. These are gram- positive spherical bacteria which form long chains. S. pyogenes is the most common cause of tonsillitis causing infection of the tonsils at the back of the mouth. The tonsils become inflamed and a general fever results. Other S. pyogenes infections include scarlet fever, septicaemia (blood poisoning), and general infections of the skin and lymphatic system. Magnification unknown.
