S. salivarius is a gram- positive non-motile spherical (cocci) bacteria normally found in the human mouth. This is a thermophilus (growing at high temperature) subspecies of S. salivarius. The host's immune response is repelled by the bacteria's ability to alter the proteins on its surface which allow it to be recognized by the body. Certain strains of S. salivarius can thus contribute to tooth decay. Magnification unknown.
