Caption: Streptococcus bacteria. Light micrograph of group B Streptococcus bacteria. These are rounded or spherical Gram-positive bacteria. These bacteria are carried in the vagina and rectum by many women. There is danger that they may transmit the bacteria to their children during birth. This can cause shock, pneumonia and in rare cases meningitis. Since the bacteria always divide in the same plane they tend to form chains of cells, as seen here at upper right. Pathogenic Streptococcus can cause sore throats, tonsillitis, scarlet fever and wound infections. Magnification unknown.
