Caption: Nitrosospira bacterium. Transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a freeze-etched nitrogen- fixing bacterium (Nitrosospira sp. ). Its patterned lattice exterior is formed from a crystalline outer membrane protein (COMP). This Gram-negative soil bacterium obtains energy from ammonia and in the process converts it into nitrites. Other bacteria convert the nitrites into nitrates, which are used by plants. Magnification: x300,000 at 6.5x8.5 inch size.
