Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of the soil bacteria Streptomyces lividans, a natural antibiotic producer (Streptomycin). Member of the Actinomycetes group, these bacteria share many characteristics with the fungi. They grow as a branching network of filaments (mycelium) in the soil & produce aerial mycelium, from the tips of which develop spore chains of indefinite length. Visible here is an exquisitely formed spiral of spores, which when mature rupture & are dispersed on the wind. Mag: X75,000 (at 10x8 size), X10,700 (at 35mm size).
