Caption: Sulphur-eating bacterium used in toxic waste treatment. Coloured transmission electron micrograph of a sulphur-eating bacterium Desulphovibrio sp., a genus being tested for use in toxic waste treatment. In anaerobic conditions, such as those found in waste effluents, the bacterium obtains oxygen from sulphate ions. This liberates sulphide ions which may bond with iron in the waste water to form a precipitate, seen here as the hair-like coating, which attracts toxic metals. The bacterium and its toxic coat may then be isolated by magnetic separation. Magnification: x3,700 at 6x7cm size. x12,500 at 8x10".
