Caption: Natrialba magadii archaea. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a group of the extremophile Natrialba (or Natronobacterium) magadii archaea. These bacillus (rod-shaped) microbes live in pools with high salt concentration, and high (alkaline) pH. They can tolerate a pH as high as 11. Due to their particular requirements, they are not pathogenic in humans. Magnification: x2000 at 6x7cm size.
