Caption: False-colour transmission electron micrograph of numerous individuals of Mycoplasma sp. (red, elongated forms at top left), infecting the surface of a cell. Many species are parasites, living on the moist mucosal membranes of humans. Some species, such as Mycoplasma pneumoniae causing a pneumonia-like infection in humans, are serious pathogens. Mycoplasmas are the smallest cellular organisms known (diameter 0. 3-0. 9 microns). Similar to bacteria in some respects (the relationship is unclear), they differ in that they lack a true cell wall & hence display a variety of forms, these being elongated. Magnification: X 4400 at 35mm size.
