Caption: Mycoplasma mycoides bacteria, coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM). Mycoplasma bacteria lack a cell wall and so have no definite shape. They are the smallest bacteria known, and also have a very small genome (total genetic material). M. mycoides causes contagious bovine pleuropneumonia, a highly contagious respiratory disease in cattle that is widespread in Africa, India and China. Magnification: x33,000 when printed at 10 centimetres wide.
