Caption: Bubble chamber photo of the production & decay of a xi- minus particle together with its antimatter equivalent, an antixi-minus. The diagram identif- ies the particle tracks. An antiproton enters the picture from bottom & annihilates with a proton in the bubble chamber liquid to produces the xi & antixi. Both decay within a short time, the xi to a lambda & the antixi to an antilambda. Being neutral, the lambda particles leave no tracks, but betray their existence when they decay to a proton (or antiproton) & a negative (or positive) pion. The xi & lambda particles belong to the family of strange particles, which contain a strange quark. The xi is also known as the cascade particle.
