Caption: Bread mould. Light micrograph of Rhizopus nigricans, a fungus which lives on bread , fruit and most kinds of decaying matter. Threads (hyphae) of mycelium anchor the fungus and absorb nutrients from the surroundings. Spores develop in the bulb-like bodies (sporangia) until the walls rupture, releasing the spores into the air for wind dispersal. Spores which land on a favourable site will germinate quickly and produce a new mass of hyphae. Magnification: x400 at 35mm size.
