Caption: Typhoon Mirinae storm surge. The storm surge (a rise in the sea level causing the sea to flood the land) has collapsed these corrugated metal homes near Manila in the Philippines. Typhoon is the term used in the Pacific for hurricanes. Typhoon Mirinae was a category 2 hurricane that lasted from 25 October to 2 November 2009. Wind speeds peaked at 150 kilometres per hour. The typhoon caused flooding and extensive damage in the Philippines and Vietnam, leaving 162 people dead. Photographed on 30 October 2009.
