Caption: Bubble chamber photo of the production & decay of a xi- minus particle & a lambda particle. Negative kaons enter at bottom & stream up the picture, curving clockwise in the chamber's magnetic field. One collides at lower centre with a proton in the bubble chamber liquid to produce the xi-minus & a neutral kaon. The xi rapidly decays to a negative pion, which curves left, & the lambda. Being neutral, the kaon & lambda leave no tracks, but reveal their presence when they decay: the kaon to a negative & positive pion, the lambda to a proton & negative pion. Kaons, xi & lambda particles are all strange particles, containing a strange quark. The xi is also known as the cascade particle.
