Caption: Scanning electron micrograph of a pathogenic fungus Erisyphe pisi also known as E. polygoni, cause of powdery mildew on grasses including cereals, clover, & peas. Economically disastrous, the infection begins with a conidium (spore, seen here) germinating a short germ tube (right), which attaches to the leaf surface (pea here) with a pad or appressorium (tip). A tube grows from under the pad into the epidermis. If the plant is susceptible the tube produces outgrowths in the cell called haustoria (food gatherers). The start of the mycelium, a network of hyphae developing on the leaf surface, is represented by the 2nd growth here. Mag:X1400 (10x8 size)
