Caption: False-colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of a culture of the dermatophyte fungus, Trichophyton rubrum. Some species of Trichophyton produce antibiotic penicillin as by-product of metabolism. The thread-like structures visible are hyphae, the vegetative elements of fungus. Fungal growth is usually confined to tips of hyphae, where asexual reproduction occurs by spore formation. Other species of Trichophyton cause disease in man, inhabiting the skin, nails & scalp. Ringworm of the scalp Tinea capitis (Tinea [L.] - worm or insect lava) is caused by members of Trichophyton sp., and gives rise to scaly, annular skin lesions. Magnification: X 500 at 35mm size.
