Caption: Bubble chamber photo of a cosmic ray event in a bubble chamber at the Lawrence Berkeley Laborat- ory, California. The cosmic ray particle has struck a proton at rest in the wall of the bubble chamber at the bottom of the picture & produced a spray of new particles. The particles traversing the picture from right to left are not related to the event; they are the beam of particles produced from the Laboratory's Bevatron particle accelerat- or. The paths of the particles in the picture are bent by the bubble chamber's magnetic field: the more massive & energetic the particle, the less its path bends. The small, tight spiral tracks are produced by lightweight, low-energy electrons.
