Caption: False colour scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the spore-bearing bodies of the fungus Aspergillus niger. Aspergillus species are common in the environment in dust, soil and vegetable material. A. niger is commonly found in the human outer ear and can become pathogenic, causing otomycosis and otitis externa (irritation and inflammation of the canal between the eardrum and the external opening of the ear). The blue filaments are hyphae (part of the mycelium or vegetative body of the fungus) and the brown spheres are the spore masses. Magnification: x190 at 6x6 cm size.
