Caption: Bubble chamber photo of the production & decay of a negative sigma particle. Negative pions enter at bottom & stream up the picture. One collides with a proton in the bubble chamber liquid, producing a negative sigma & a positive kaon. The sigma decays almost immediately to a negative pion & a neutron, which is unseen. The kaon also decays, at the point where its track changes direction slightly. It decays into an unidentified positive particle & an unseen neutral particle. The sigma & kaon are both strange particles, containing a strange quark. As the example shows, strange particles are always produced in pairs - a phenomenon known as "associated production".
