Caption: Salivary gland cancer, light micrograph. This is a tissue sample from a mucoepidermoid carcinoma of an accessory salivary gland. A slow-growing cancer, mucoepidermoid carcinoma is the most common type of salivary gland cancer found in children. In humans there are three sets of paired salivary glands and also other accessory salivary glands. They are exocrine glands, secreting saliva and mucus to help break down food in the mouth. This sample has been prepared using the hematoxylin and eosin stain (HES). Magnification: x70 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
