Caption: Salivary gland syndrome, light micrograph. Tissue sample from a case of Gougerot-Sjogren syndrome of an accessory salivary gland. This syndrome is an autoimmune disorder in which the immune system attacks and destroys exocrine glands, specifically those that produce tears and saliva. The salivary glands secrete saliva and mucus to help break down food in the mouth. This sample has been prepared using the hematoxylin and eosin stain (HES). Magnification: x70 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
