Caption: Oak leaf. Macrophotograph of a leaf from a pedunculate oak (Quercus robur, also known as Quercus pedunculata). The veins (light green lines) are part of the vascular system for food and water transport around the leaf. The midrib is the main vein and runs down left, with other veins branching off it. Leaves contain the green pigment chlorophyll that is used to trap the energy of sunlight by photosynthesis. Magnification: x5.6 when printed at 10 centimetres across.
