Caption: People in Moscow observing the total solar eclipse of 1 August 2008. Over Moscow, the Sun appeared about half covered at its greatest eclipse. Totality was visible farther east in Russia, notably from the city of Novosibirsk. At its greatest, the eclipse lasted 2 minutes and 27 seconds, casting a shadow on the Earth 237 kilometres across. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes directly between the Sun and the Earth, blocking out the bright disk of the Sun from view.
