Caption: Total solar eclipse of 1 August 2008, as seen from the Russian city of Novosibirsk. At its greatest, the eclipse lasted 2 minutes and 27 seconds, casting a shadow on the Earth 237 kilometres across. A total solar eclipse occurs when the Moon comes directly between the Sun and the Earth, blocking out the bright disk of the Sun from view. With the bright solar surface blocked from view, the outer corona of the Sun may be observed, apparently forming a halo around the Moon.
