Caption: Satellite launch. A Proton-M rocket launches from the Baikonur Cosmodrome, Kazakhstan, on 25 December 2008. The rocket is carrying three GLONASS (GLObal NAvigation Satellite System) satellites. These, along with 21 others, will provide Russian users with accurate and precise position data anywhere in the world. These can be used in navigation systems for military and civilian users, much as the American Global Positioning System (GPS) does.
