Caption: Whitin Observatory, Wellesley College, Wellesley, Massachusetts, USA, with two women on the path in front of the building. This astronomical observatory was built in 1900 with funds from college trustee Sarah Elizabeth Whitin. The observatory initially housed a 12-inch telescope, as well as other astronomical equipment and a library. The first director was the US astronomer Sarah Frances Whiting (1847-1927). Further additions and expansions were made in 1906 and 1967. This image is from volume 8 (1900) of the US magazine Popular Astronomy.
