Caption: Sun and Moon wheel chart, 16th century artwork. This volvelle (wheel chart) is used to show the place of the Sun and Moon in the Zodiac. It has moveable parts (at left) which are moved around the circle as needed. The text is in Latin, and includes the names of the months. Around the edges are the signs of the zodiac. This artwork is from Theatrum mundi et temporis (1588), a work by the Italian astronomer and scholar Giovanni Paolo Gallucci (1538-1621). This star atlas of several volumes included artworks of astronomical equipment, as well as star maps. The title translates as 'Theatre of the World and Time'. This work was published in Venice.
