Caption: Title page of Argoli's Ephemerides (1659). This book was written by the Italian astronomer and scholar Andrea Argoli (1570-1657). An ephemerides is a table of astronomical data showing the positions of astronomical objects in the sky for a range of different times. This artwork shows a classical muse figure making celestial measurements, while an Atlas figure supports the sky. The Latin text at lower left references the author, while the dates (1640-1700) show the period of time that these ephemerides calculations cover. The celestial globe includes depictions of the constellations, while a cherub and an armillary sphere are at lower right.
