Caption: Aspergillus niger. View of a 4 day culture (at 22 degrees celsius) of the fungus Aspergillus niger, direct plating taken from an ear swab. The black/ brown spore-bearing fruiting bodies of the fungus are seen, above the white mycelium. Aspergillus species are common in the environment in dust, soil and vegetable material. A. niger is commonly found in the human outer ear and can become pathogenic, causing otitis externa (irritation and inflammation of the outer ear canal). Otomycosis is the name of the persistent inflammation of the outer ear caused by fungal infection.
