Caption: Prior to the domestication of animals and their use as beasts of burden, in about 4, 000 BC, transport on land was on foot. This coloured illustration is from a bas-relief shows an Egyptian army on the march. Marching is a sub-gait of walking which produces an efficient high-speed walk. Egyptian armies could march fifteen miles a day for a week in hot sunshine and over rough terrain without becoming exhausted.
