Caption: Archaeological excavation site. Equipment outside the entrance to the Blombos cave archaeological site in South Africa. This site was made famous by the discovery of pieces of ochre engraved with abstract designs, 75000-year-old beads made from Nassarius shells, and bone tools thought to be around 80,000-years-old. The cave is at the foot of a cliff, currently about 35 metres above sea level and 100 metres from the shore. During periods of occupation, the shore was much further away.
