Caption: Stone Age stone fragments. Close-up of a collection of fashioned stone fragments found during excavations at the Klasies River Caves archaeological site in South Africa. This is one of the oldest known sites where remains of anatomically modern humans have been found. These artefacts are thought to have been fashioned around 70-80,000 years ago, suggesting that symbolic behaviour evolved much earlier in the course of human cultural innovation than had previously been considered likely.
