Caption: Sterkfontein cave tour. School children, on a tour through the Sterkfontein caves in South Africa, playing with a bust of Robert Broom. Numerous early hominid remains have been found at these caves, which were declared a World Heritage Site in 2000. The remains are thought to belong to Australopithecus, early Homo, and Paranthropus species. Broom (1866-1951) was a Scottish palaeoanthropologist who led the first concerted excavations of the caves, discovering the first adult Australopicethine remains in 1936.
