Caption: Particle collision. Coloured bubble chamber image of particle tracks following the collision between two protons. One proton came from an accelerator, the other was a nucleus of the hydrogen in the chamber. The tracks are left by charged particles such as electrons and pions. An applied magnetic field makes the charged particles follow a curved trajectory - the direction depending on the charge/mass ratio of the particle and its velocity. The horizontal line shows the orientation of the magnetic field; the two small crosses are reference marks about 20cm apart. This image was based on an event recorded at the Stanford Linear Accelerator Center, California.
