Caption: Bracket fungus on the floor of a rainforest. Bracket fungi (polypores) belong with mushrooms, toadstools and puffballs to the best-known class of fungi, the basidiomycetes. The shelf-like structure seen here is the basidiocarp, the spore- bearing "fruit" of the fungus. The basidiocarps of bracket fungi can live for many years and often show distinct growth layers. Photographed in the Ecuadorian Amazon.
