Caption: Wallis's Treatise of Algebra. Title page to A Treatise of Algebra (1685) by the English mathematician John Wallis (1616-1703). This book was both a practical guide to the methods of algebra of the time, and also a guide to the history of algebra. At lower centre is a description of four additional treatises, including Wallis's Cono-Cuneus, now known as Plucker's Conoid. The author details below this indicate Wallis to be a Doctor of Divinity (D.D.), Savilian Professor of Geometry at the University of Oxford, and a member of the Royal Society. The publisher (bottom) was the well-known London printer John Playford (1623-1686/7).
