Caption: Vasily Vasil'yevich Dokuchaev (1846-1903), Russian geologist. Dokuchaev is considered the father of modern soil science (pedology). He was the first to advance the idea that the characteristics of soil depended not just on the geology of the parent rocks, but also on factors such as climate, topography and the time over which the soil formed. He made extensive surveys of soils throughout Russia, and was the first to propose a systematic soil classification.
