Caption: Boris Borisovich Kadomtsev (b.1928), Russian physicist. Kadomtsev was born at Penza but studied in Moscow. After graduating in physics in 1951 he went to work in nuclear fusion research. His major contributions to the thermodynamics of turbulent plasmas have resulted in many advances in plasma confinement, a key component of the 'tokomak' design of fusion reactor. He also contributed to the design of thermal shielding for the interior of reactor vessels. His later career has been as a department head at the Kurchatov Institute near Moscow. Photographed in 1989.
