Caption: Sputnik 2. Cut-away model of the top of the rocket carrying Sputnik 2, the second man-made object to be placed into orbit. This model allows a view of the central radio transmitter (spherical), below which is the compartment that carried Laika, a dog. Sputnik 2 was launched on 3 November 1957. It is thought that Laika survived for only a few hours due to heat stress. The Sputnik 2 capsule orbited for 162 before it re-entered the atmosphere and burned up. This model was photographed at the Exhibition of Economic Achievements in Moscow in 1965.
