Caption: Scale model of the N1 launcher. At left is a 1/10th scale model of the entire N1 vehicle, at right is a 1/5th scale model of the upper stage without its launch shroud. The N1 was intended to carry Soviet cosmonauts to land on the Moon. However, severe underfunding, lack of testing and a late start to the project meant that the launcher was unable to match the performance of the American Saturn V that carried the Apollo missions. Four N1 rockets were launched between 1969 and 1972, all of which failed before reaching orbit. When it was clear the Americans would win the race to the Moon, the N1 project was stopped and all evidence of it hidden.
