Caption: Israel Moiseevich Gelfand (1913-2009), Soviet mathematician. Gelfand was born at Okny in Ukraine. He had little formal schooling but a natural gift for mathematics and in 1932 managed to gain an undergraduate place at Moscow State University. Gelfand is regarded as one of the greatest mathematicians of the 20th century, having made major contributions to group theory, representation theory and linear algebra. For many years he was professor of mathematics at Moscow State University. However, in 1989 he emigrated to the USA and settled as a professor at Rutgers University.
