Caption: Artistic restoration. A specialist working with fragments of damaged fresco, attempting to restore it. A fresco is a work of art painted onto wet plaster, as the plaster dries the pigments bind into the structure of the plaster. This was a technique much used in churches for devotional pieces. This restorer is working in Veliky Novgorod on frescoes from a church destroyed during the Second World War. The church was rebuilt in 2003, after which the project to assemble some 1.7 million fragments of original fresco begun. Photographed in 2007.
