Caption: Liver macrophage cell. Coloured transmission electron micrograph (TEM) of a section through a liver macrophage (also called a Kupffer cell), showing many lysosomes (dark circles) that are digesting cellular and foreign debris. The cell nucleus (large, round) can be seen in the centre of the cytoplasm (green). Macrophages are a type of large white blood cell that recognise foreign particles and phagocytose (engulf and digest) them. Magnification: x5700 when printed 10 centimetres wide.
