Caption: Asian soya bean rust research plot. Sentinel plot set up to monitor and model the spread of Asian soya bean rust disease. A soy bean (Glycine max) crop has been planted near kudzu (Pueraria montana) vines (bright green in background), which are a wild host of the rust fungus (Phakopsora pachyrhizi). The sentinel plot system consists of a set of plots set up across the Midwestern US to monitor the presence of the disease and act as an early warning system for an outbreak.
