Caption: Microsporum fungus. Coloured light micrograph (LM) of the fungus, Microsporum sp., some types of which cause ringworm in humans. The cylindrical fruiting bodies are connected by vegetative filaments called hyphae. Microsporum sp. are found in the soil and as dermatophytic parasites, infecting the skin, hair and nails of animals and humans. Some species cause ringworm, or tinea, of the scalp, feet, hands, nails or body. In ringworm, snake-like and ring-like lesions are produced on the skin. Additional symptoms vary according to the particular part of the body affected. Tinea is spread by contact with fungal spores. Magnification unknown.
