Caption: Giant prickly stick insect. Young girl looking at a female giant prickly stick insect (Extatosoma tiaratum). This solitary insect is endemic to Australia. When no males are present females exhibit parthenogenesis, where eggs are laid without fertilisation. These un-fertilised eggs take up to nine months to hatch and produce only females.
