Caption: Candida albicans fungus. Coloured scanning electron micrograph (SEM) of the yeast-like fungus Candida albicans, the cause of human thrush. The fungus' elongated hyphae have grape-like clusters of blastospores on their tips. Blastospores are a form of conidium, an asexually-produced non-motile spore. C. albicans causes candidiasis, an infection which affects the moist mucous membranes of the body, such as skin folds, mouth, respiratory tract and vagina. Oral and vaginal conditions are known as thrush. The infection may also appear in persons receiving prolonged broad- spectrum antibiotics. Magnification: x550 at 35mm size.
