Caption: Candida albicans. Coloured Scanning Electron Micrograph (SEM) of the fungus Candida albicans. Here, elongated strands called "pseudohyphae" are visible in a row. At the junction of each pseudo- hypha, rounded yeast-like cells (blastospores) are being budded off in colonies. Candida albicans occurs on moist mucous membranes of the human body such as skin folds, mouth, and female genital tract. It is usually harmless, but can become pathogenic in patients suffering from diabetes, malnutrition, or during antibiotic treatment. Candida albicans causes the infection candidiasis. Oral or vaginal conditions are otherwise known as thrush. Magnification: x1,550 at 6x7cm size. x2,550 at 4x5".
