Caption: Comet West, optical image. One of the brightest comets observed in the 1970s, comet West was observable to the naked eye from all parts of the world. It was discovered by Richard M. West on 10th August 1975, and reached peak brightness in March 1976 when this image was taken. It has an estimated period of 300,000 years.
