Caption: Ultrasound gel. Close-up of the labelling on a bottle of the gel used in ultrasound scanning. This gel aids transition of the sound waves from the ultrasound transducer into the body, as well as allowing the echoes to be detected by the transducer as they re-emerge from the body. The gel is non-corrosive and safe for use on the skin. Ultrasound scanning is a diagnostic technique where ultrasound waves (high-frequency sound waves) from a transducer are reflected by body tissues. These echoes are detected by the transducer and used to build an image of structures inside the body.
