Caption: Sea ice crystals. Close-up of large ice crystals that have formed on sea ice, ice that forms on the surface of the sea. As sea water is salty, it freezes at a lower temperature than freshwater. The resulting ice, however, is not salty. These crystals are 7 to 10 centimetres long, a size of crystal that normally only forms in calm conditions. Photographed on the shore of Loch Dunvegan, on the Isle of Skye, of the western coast of Scotland.
